MOLLE Loadout Builder
MOLLE is a modular attachment system that lets you configure gear to your specific use case rather than buying a fixed setup that approximates what you need. A MOLLE vest or plate carrier is a platform — the pouches and accessories you attach to it define what it does. Rothco manufactures both the platforms and a comprehensive range of MOLLE-compatible pouches, which means you can build a complete modular system from one source without compatibility concerns.
Build a modular MOLLE loadout — vests, plate carriers, pouches, and accessories that configure to your specific mission or role.
Understanding MOLLE
MOLLE stands for Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment. The system uses rows of PALS webbing — parallel horizontal straps sewn at fixed intervals — that accept compatible pouches by weaving attachment straps through the rows and securing them. Any MOLLE-compatible pouch attaches to any MOLLE-compatible platform, regardless of manufacturer. Rothco’s MOLLE gear is fully compatible with other brands’ MOLLE systems.
Platform Selection
Start with the base platform. Rothco’s MOLLE vests range from lightweight utility vests to full plate carrier systems. For general-purpose use, a MOLLE vest without plates provides significant carrying capacity and attachment real estate without the weight and bulk of a loaded plate carrier. For training, security, or tactical applications where armor is appropriate, Rothco’s plate carrier systems accept standard SAPI and ESAPI armor inserts.
A chest rig is a lower-profile alternative to a full vest — it carries magazines and critical accessories across the chest without covering the back, which reduces heat retention in warm conditions. Rothco’s chest rig options are a good choice for range training and light tactical use.
Building Your Pouch Configuration
Start with your actual use case, not with what looks complete on a vest. A security professional needs a light, a radio, and possibly handcuff or OC spray pouches — a magazine pouch matters less. A range shooter needs magazine pouches and a dump pouch and probably nothing else. Build from what you actually use, not from what a full tactical load looks like.
Common pouch categories to consider: single and double magazine pouches, a utility or general-purpose pouch for miscellaneous gear, a dump pouch for spent magazines, a medical or IFAK pouch for trauma gear, and an admin pouch for documents, pens, and small flat items. Rothco’s MOLLE pouch catalog covers all of these in multiple size and configuration options.
Positioning and Weight
Where you mount pouches matters. Heavy items — full magazines, a trauma kit — should sit low and close to your body’s center of mass. Frequently accessed items — a light, a radio, a tourniquet — should be within natural arm reach from either hand without looking. Avoid mounting gear on your back panel unless it’s rarely accessed, since reaching behind your back while wearing a vest is difficult and slow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Rothco MOLLE pouches fit non-Rothco vests?
Yes. MOLLE compatibility is standardized. Rothco pouches attach to any PALS-webbing surface from any manufacturer, and other brands’ pouches attach to Rothco platforms.
How do I attach a MOLLE pouch correctly?
Thread the pouch’s attachment straps through every row of PALS webbing on the platform, not just some of them. Skipping rows significantly reduces retention — a pouch attached through two rows instead of four will move, rotate, and eventually fail under load.
How much gear is too much?
If your vest is so loaded that it limits your movement or takes more than a few seconds to locate any item, it’s overloaded. Build up gradually. Wear a loaded vest for a few hours before deciding what stays — the items you never reach for are the items to remove.
